Exhibition at the visitor center
on the Putorana plateau

Permanent exhibition at the visitor center in the Putoransky Protecred Area. It tells about the impregnable basalt plateau of Putorana—the land of “a thousand waterfalls” and freshwater fjords, the tostrog, and the migration of wild reindeer.
Task: to create an exhibition display in a domed building, develop a thematic exhibition plan, artistic concept and visitor scenarios, create a design project with 3D, bilingual copywriting and layouts, produce exhibition furniture, deliver and supervise installation.

The Putoransky Nature Reserve is home to the unique landscapes of northern Siberia, a natural relic, the “land of a thousand waterfalls” and freshwater fjords, the primary ecosystem of Taimyr, and one of the largest nature reserves in Russia. The Putorana Plateau is considered a benchmark example of trap, or stepped, relief. One of the most striking phenomena in the reserve's animal world is the mass seasonal migration of a significant part of the Taimyr population of wild reindeer.
The design of the visitor center had to show the uniqueness of the area as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, convey the stages of formation of the Putorana Plateau landscape and the history of the reserve's establishment, tell about volunteer programs and tourist opportunities, and create a lecture hall, a souvenir shop, and storage areas.

Sensory codes in the materials and plastics of the exhibition:
  • Airiness and water, splashes from “a thousand lakes and waterfalls of Putoran” and the transparency of the sky;
  • The play of light created by the refraction of daylight on transparent surfaces;
  • Inaccessibility and power expressed in vandal-proof materials and deep colors;
  • The layered nature of basalt is recreated in the color and shape of the main exhibition structures.

The main feature of the exhibition is the Northern Lights installation made of translucent acrylic under the dome of the building. Refracting daylight, it creates glare and sets the tone for the interplay of color and light throughout the exhibition space.

The exhibition is designed so that tourists can explore it on their own or take a guided tour. The first floor tells the story of the reserve and displays an installation of basalt trapps. The niche contains exhibition areas that tell about biodiversity, including the largest migration route of reindeer in Eurasia. There are reindeer antlers that you can pick up and try on, and next to them are life-size reindeer dolls “always on their suitcases.”
A second mezzanine floor has been created under the dome, accessed by a staircase that serves as a kind of “ascent” to the highest point of the plateau. Each step symbolizes a rise to a certain height above sea level. Under the dome of the “northern lights” is a place for lectures, relaxation, and reflection, a space where you can see the beauty of the reserve from a bird's eye view.
At the end of the visitor center tour, information about volunteer programs was posted, an exhibition area about the cultural context was created (the film Territory was filmed here, among others), a small souvenir shop was designed, and a stand about tourist opportunities was set up with materials that visitors can take with them.
