Entrance Steles
to the Meshersky forests

Entrance steles in the Ryazan Region in the Meschersky National Park – the birthplace of Sergei Yesenin and the protected nature celebrated by Konstantin Paustovsky. The steles are installed in Spas-Klepiki and on the borders of the protected area in the Moscow, Ryazan, and Vladimir directions.
Task: to develop an artistic idea, concept, and design for entrance gates to the Meschersky National Park, to design engineering solutions, to manufacture and deliver the structures to Spas-Klepiki, and to install one of them in the city and three on federal highways at the borders of the nature reserve.
Task: to develop an artistic idea, concept, and design for entrance gates to the Meschersky National Park, to design engineering solutions, to manufacture and deliver the structures to Spas-Klepiki, and to install one of them in the city and three on federal highways at the borders of the nature reserve.
One of the four steles is installed in Spas-Klepiki near the National Park Administration building.
When creating the artistic design, we were inspired by Dementy Shmarinov's illustration on the cover of the first edition of Konstantin Paustovsky's novel “The Meshchorskaya Side” (1939). This is not only a tribute to the famous writer, but also a way to remind visitors to the Meschersky National Park of the rich culture and literary heritage of the region.
The preliminary concept for the stele was created by sculptor as an interpretation of the cover illustration for the novel
When searching for design solutions, it was important to integrate the object into the space, minimize its foreignness, and preserve the idea of the landscape's dominant feature.

After designing, creating a technical project, and before manufacturing the stele, the next stage was to test the climate model, select a color palette according to RAL, and find solutions for combining elements of different types of production and processing.
The structures were installed in several stages. First, pile foundations were installed and reinforced at all agreed and approved installation points. Next, the structures were installed on the foundation using special equipment, and the metal frame components were welded together. The final stage was the installation of wooden panels made of specially treated softwood plywood.
The location of the steles is determined by the geographical position of Meshchera, which is located at the junction of three regions. Therefore, three entrance steles are installed at the borders of the Meshchera National Park on the main roads connecting it with the largest cities from which tourists arrive: Moscow, Ryazan, and Vladimir.
